After many months of working, I’m really proud to announce the following workshops/speechs I will give this November. I was expecting more interest in Open Design and therefore in Open P2P Design by the end of this year, but I would have never thought so much (unfortunately I had to reject a couple of invitations)! I’m still working on the contents, so expect some slideshows and texts from all these events soon.

At this event, we will discuss the emergence and proliferation of a new form of production and value creation: peer production, where communities of producers work to create (free) software/hardware and/or (open) content accessible to everyone. Within peer production, producers create products within a ‘commons’ or shared space, which can be used and modified by others who then return the product, thus improved, to the common pool. Producers often operate as a cooperative ecology between communities as well as the companies that create market-based spin-offs from that same commons.

I will talk within the afternoon sessions “Media Ecologies for Open Design Communities and Distributed Manufacturing”:

Free software-based peer production has developed integrated and sophisticated platforms facilitated by the fact that software can be executed in the same digital environment in which it is designed. But such is (at least presently) not the case for open hardware and any object that need to be made physically. In this case, much more integrated feedback loops are needed, which require more sophisticated collaboration platforms that may included designs, videos, the management of flows, recursive loops from physical experimentation; comparisons between experiments in various locales and so on. We want to know: what is the state of the art of the current collaborative platforms? What is needed? Are there any possibilities for synergies between various platform projects currently being undertaken?

with the speech “Open P2P Design. Metadesign for Open Design projects”. Unfortunately I could not organize a travel to Manchester, therefore I will be presenting remotely by video conferencing.

Many thanks to Michel Bauwens, Nathan Cravens and Phoebe Moore for inviting me!

02. Keynote speaker at Open 2009

Media Lab Helsinki Doctor of Arts Symposium

The doctoral programme in Media Lab Helsinki will organize a symposium about openness in November 5–6, 2009, which is the second edition of the event.

OPEN 2009 – Media Lab Doctor of Arts Symposium is an event for all interested parties who want to understand the ongoing shift from an industrially organized era to an era of networks and social production. The role and meaning of information is changing from a fixed, well-guarded asset to a continuously changing openly shared process. Openness is affecting the relational dynamics between different actors. New ideals, organizational forms and practices emerge. They interfere with older traditions and create a space of conflict.

What does this mean for …
… organizations?
… consumers?
… citizens?
… research?
… business?
… design?
… culture?
… art?
… society?
… environment?
… you/me/us/everone else?

I will give a keynote speech on November 6th with the title: “openp2pdesign.org. Metadesign and Strategic Design for Open Systems, Processes, Projects.”.
Here is the list of all the keynote speakers: http://mlabsymp.uiah.fi/2009/speakers/

The organization knows cities are the best setting to experiment with social and economic innovation. These cities turn into urban laboratories to experiment citizenship creativity, create sustainable settings and socialize the innovation.

[...]
Congress topics

  • PEOPLE
Cities where you can innovate with people, where creativity is seen as a tool for personal and collective development..
  • ORGANIZATIONS
Cities where organisations take actions and work in networks in order to cope with the contexts of crisis and global challenges.
  • ENVIRONMENTS
Cities composed of environments, where new models of urban innovation can be experimented as vehicles towards sustainability.

I will give a workshop (in Spanish) on friday 13th of November about how to use the Open P2P Design methodology in order to enable the distributed creativity of a city and a territory through collaborative activities: “Open P2P Design, co-diseñar una actividad colaborativa abierta con/para una comunidad y su localidad”.

04. Workshops: Open P2P Design: Enabling Design 2.0 through Open Processes, Systems, Tools and Projects in Seoul and Singapore

During the past three months I’ve been working together with Roger Pitiot in the organization of two Open P2P Design workshops that we are going to give in Seoul and Singapore in November.
We are finishing right now some details, the Seoul workshop will last 4 days while the Singapore workshop will last 3 days, but they both share the contents (even if they are designed for different audiences). Here are the contents:

Design 2.0: designers meet social networks and new technologies for distributed systems

What is Design 2.0, where it’s coming from and going to, why it’s interesting and what we should expect

  • complex problems
  • increasing importance of design
  • open innovation
  • opening design
    • with new technologies
    • Knowledge sharing
    • social networks
    • fabbing

Open P2P Design: how to organize open projects for distributed systems

What is Open P2P Design, where it’s coming from and going to, why it’s interesting and what we should expect

  • enable distributed creativity
  • collaborative activity for complex problem solving
  • metadesign for open process
  • co-design for open projects

The Workshop will answer the following questions:

  • What is Open Design and how can we develop it with a community in a collaborative way?
  • How can we design the co-design process and the tools we will use with a community?
  • How can we design the first Open Design source code and manage its business and sharing?
  • How can we set up Open Design businesses in the future and which technologies and strategies we will use?

Theoric Contents

  • Open Design System
  • How to open Design processes: co-design, collaborative design, metadesign
